OpenAI has unveiled a new feature called Intelligent UI, which notably changes the look of conversations in ChatGPT. The feature rolls out starting this Wednesday alongside a new model, GPT-6, and introduces a significant amount of visual elements within the chatbot's responses. According to the company, many of those elements will not be simple static images but interactive components: clickable buttons, custom calculators for specific tasks, interactive charts and editable diagrams that users can manipulate directly within the conversation itself.
OpenAI's stated goal is, in its own words, to make 'learning complex topics' easier. The article also notes that, although the company does not say so explicitly, it is reasonable to think this change could make ChatGPT feel friendlier and more accessible, helping to attract a broader audience than those who have so far got by with text alone.
On a call with reporters, OpenAI staff gave a brief demonstration of Intelligent UI's capabilities, showing how the chatbot can instantly generate various diagrams and visual aids designed to help grasp abstract concepts. Aarush Selvan, a product manager at the company, explained that while 'ChatGPT has been predominantly a text-based interface', the company wants to help users 'get things done' — from everyday tasks such as planning a recipe or a trip to trying to learn something — because 'the most helpful answers aren't just text'.
As a concrete example, Selvan showed the case of a college student who wanted to understand how an airplane wing generates lift: when asked to 'explore how an airplane wing generates lift', ChatGPT quickly produced several diagrams designed to show why planes stay in the air. OpenAI offered other examples of the feature in use, such as visuals for cooking recipes, a diagram explaining the mechanics of a bicycle, a map for a multi-day hiking trip and a personal savings calculator.
The new feature will be customizable. As with other aspects of ChatGPT's 'personality', users who do not want so many visual elements in their answers will be able to dial them back and return to a format closer to traditional text.
As for the rollout, Intelligent UI is arriving globally alongside GPT-6 for users on the Pro, Plus, Business and Enterprise plans, while users on the free and Go (lower-cost) tiers will have access to it starting Thursday.
Taken together, the move points to a transformation of ChatGPT that goes beyond improving text answers: it is about redesigning the interaction interface itself so the chatbot can build, on the fly, small 'apps' or visual panels tailored to each query. It is a step that fits a broader industry trend toward AI assistants that not only converse but generate functional tools and interfaces in real time to solve specific user tasks.
