Anthropic cuts Claude Code's weekly limits by 17% while announcing it as a 25% increase

Anthropic has announced that starting September 14 it will permanently raise Claude Code's weekly usage limits by 25% for the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise (seat-based) plans. Put that way, it sounds like an improvement for users, but the announcement itself contains some relevant fine print: that 25% is calculated on the original limit baseline, not on what users have available today.

The reason is that Claude Code currently enjoys a temporary 50% increase over the standard limits, in effect until September 13. When that temporary boost expires and the permanent 25% increase takes effect, the net result will be a smaller weekly allowance than the current one. A simple example: if the original limit was 100, the current temporary increase puts it at 150; from September 14 it will drop to 125. That is, 25% more than before the promotion, but around 17% less than what any user has available right now.

Anthropic initially communicated the change on X with a message highlighting the 25% increase without mentioning the effective reduction relative to the present. That first thread was deleted shortly afterward and replaced by a clarification in which the company explicitly admits the cut: "compared with today, this represents a 17% reduction in Claude Code's weekly limits." In that same clarification, Anthropic says it is working on "interesting changes" that will make usage feel greater, along with more visibility and control over consumption, though no details or timelines have been specified.

The company also points out that actual Claude usage does not equate to a fixed number of prompts: it varies depending on the length of the conversation, the model chosen, tool use and the level of effort applied to each task, which makes it harder for end users to anticipate how long their weekly allowance will last.

Ultimately, this is an adjustment of expectations rather than a real improvement: those who had grown used to the temporary 50% boost will see their usage margin reduced from mid-September, even if they still start from a higher baseline than existed before Anthropic introduced that one-off enhancement.
