Microsoft redesigns Photos in Windows 11 with a new Gallery, Editor and Viewer

Microsoft is redesigning the Windows 11 Photos app with a new Gallery, a new Editor and a new Viewer. According to the article, the update was announced on October 15 and is rolling out first to Windows Insider program participants. General availability is planned for later in 2026. The downloaded text is a brief summary of the news, so this analysis is limited to what it covers.

Gallery: all your photos in one place. The new Gallery brings together local photos, OneDrive photos and iCloud photos. It includes filters by people and by storage source. It also offers natural-language search, so users can describe an image instead of remembering the file name. Local semantic search depends on compatible hardware. Browsing local or iCloud content does not require signing in to OneDrive.

Editor: tools grouped by task. The rebuilt Editor organizes its controls into four sections: Crop, Enhance, Repair and Stylize. It supports HDR editing. It can save HEIC and WebP images in their original format.

Viewer: details alongside the image. The Viewer places file information, camera data and a histogram in a side panel. That way the image stays visible while the user reviews its metadata. Edit, print and share actions are close at hand.

Overall, the redesign focuses on unifying photo sources (local, OneDrive and iCloud), more natural search and a more orderly editing workflow. The article gives no further details, such as specific general rollout dates, exact hardware requirements or pricing. For those points, it is best to wait for Microsoft's official documentation.
